The Albanian Helsinki Committee (AHC) became aware through the media about serious acts of violence on Prof. Sokol Mëngjesi, lecturer at the Faculty of Law, University of Tirana, and at the same time a lawyer by profession. These acts occurred as he was getting out of the kindergarten where he had taken his child, in the morning today.
Everyone’s life is precious and the state has the positive obligation to protect it. Nobody has the right to commit acts of violence that cause harm to the health and jeopardize the life of anyone.
Such acts, besides being harmful, create a dangerous perception for society and public order, that our life and health are not safe.
It is worth emphasizing that solidarity toward such violent acts that affect and threaten the figure, life, and health of functionaries and professionals of the justice system or any other profession is not enough.
In a repeated manner, AHC has made calls for comprehensive, effective and timely investigations and for holding perpetrators accountable. As a result, AHC is of the opinion that the justice bodies, helped on time by specialized law enforcement authorities, could make a positive contribution to the general and special, effective, prevention of such criminal acts.
In closing, AHC wishes Prof. Sokol Mëngjesi complete and fast recovery.
