With profound sadness, AHC strongly condemns the criminal and very dangerous act against Appeals Court judge Astrit Kalaja.
As a result of this unprecedented act, the perpetrator dared to shoot with a weapon in the courtroom, in premises of the Court of Appeals, at a judge, victim Astrit Kalaja; after media reports, it appears that the judge passed away. Also, as a result of this act, two other citizens sustained injuries.
This represents profound grief for the family and relatives of the judge Astrit Kalaja, whom AHC conveys its heartfelt condolences.
This despicable act is also a grave demonstration of pressure on the justice bodies. AHC expresses full solidarity with the judicial corps in the country.
At the same time, AHC calls on responsible institutions to take under protection the buildings where functionaries of the justice system exercise their duties, increase vigilance, and be accountable for the unprecedented act that claimed the life of a judge in the court premises.
AHC suggests to the prosecution office to conduct a fast and comprehensive investigation to discover not only the real motive behind this event, but also the responsibility of individuals responsible for checking those entering these premises, in accordance with security rules.
The protection of judges, prosecutors, and the justice institutions is indispensable for the rule of law, the constitutional order, and public safety.
